Haydn: Symphony No. 64 | Bartók: Bluebeard's Castle

While slightly more familiar to many listeners than most of the symphonies composed by Joseph Haydn during his decades as indentured servant/composer to the court of the dukes of Esterházy, the Symphony No.64 played in the first half of this NDR Sinfonieorchester concert is still relatively unknown. Many Haydn symphonies have nicknames but this one, unusually, goes back to the composer, who added ‘Tempora mutantur’ to the manuscript, in reference to an old adage that times change – and we change with them, though not necessarily for the better: a gentle expression of worldly-wise cynicism that sits well with our knowledge of Haydn from his genial correspondence.
