The last Carnegie Hall appearance of the 1985-6 season given by the Cleveland Orchestra and Christoph von Dohnányi was also something of a celebration for one of the city’s favourite musical sons, Isaac Stern: as perhaps was any appearance he made in the hall that he had been instrumental in saving from the wrecking ball in the 1960s; the main auditorium was later named in his honour, and he served as the Hall’s president until his death in 2001.
