For their annual visit to the BBC Proms, the Philharmonia Orchestra preceded Bartók’s only opera with a pointillistically instrumented suite from Thomas Ades’s first. Powder Her Face began life as a chamber opera, but the Overture, Waltz and Finale were played here with ‘bittersweet finesse’ according to the Guardian. Both Falk Struckmann and Charlotte Hellekant gave ‘superb’ performances in Duke Bluebeard’s Castle: ‘a tremendous experience made all the more palpable by the comparative restraint of Dohnányi’s approach.’
