Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Festival Hall, March 29, 2001
Soloists: | Bronfman, Yefim (piano) |
- Programme:
- Henze: Symphony No. 5 | Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 3 | Henze: Fraternite (European premier) | Beethoven: Symphony No. 5
Having performed Beethoven’s First Symphony four days previously, the Philharmonia Orchestra and Christoph von Dohnányi now programmed the Fifth to strike sparks against Hans Werner Henze’s Fifth, which is among the most concise and transparently orchestrated of his ten symphonies. Henze’s roots in the Austro-German tradition were also displayed by the lush Mahlerian song of Fraternité, composed just two years earlier.
