During the 1988 Vienna Festival, the Wiener Philharmoniker invited Christoph von Dohnányi to direct thir 175th anniversary concert of pieces which had received their first performances in the orchestra’s gilded home of the Musikvereinsaal; and in their own ways pieces which, like the city itself, look back to an unrecoverable past.
