As the Everest of violin concertos, Beethoven’s work well deserves its place in the second half of the concert, played by a frequent musical partner of Christoph von Dohnányi. The conductor made full use of Avery Hall’s space in the first half, positioning the lonely trumpeter who asks Ives’s Unanswered Question at the back of the audience, and the flutes who give increasingly incoherent answers at the back of the stage, facing away from him and taking their cues from an assistant conductor.
