This concert marked the end of more than a decade since Christoph von Dohnányi had last conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker. He had led them in The Unanswered Question 14 years previously; this time the question was answered obliquely by Bartok’s nocturnally mysterious Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, followed by the heroic certainties of Beethoven’s Third Symphony.
