Brahms: Double Concert for Violin and Cello | Brahms: Symphony No. 2

To open the subscription series of the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s 2013-14 season, Christoph von Dohnányi led an all-Brahms programme of two works in which ripeness is all: the mackerel sky of the Second Symphony, and the Double Concerto by which he attempted to effect a belated rapprochement with his former friend and colleague Joseph Joachim, writing for Joachim’s violin alongside the cello of Robert Haussmann, perhaps standing symbolically for the person of Brahms himself.
