With an unlikely but insightful twist of programming since imitated by other eminent conductors, Christoph von Dohnányi followed the gentle dissipating clouds of dissonance in Ligeti’s breakthrough work Atmosphères with the cool, clear light of revelation as imagined by Wagner for the prelude to Lohengrin. The second half could hardly have presented a starker contrast, with the all-too-human fate wrought by Tchaikovsky in his Fourth Symphony.
