In the second of his subscription programmes during the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s 2004-5 season, Christoph von Dohnányi conducted the local premiere of a work he had commissioned with the Cleveland Orchestra, Shadow of Night by Sir Harrison Birtwistle. The composer was present, and took three calls from the enthusiastic reception afforded him by Symphony Hall’s audience: the orchestra had never previously played Birtwistle’s music.
