In an all-Beethoven concert, the Cleveland Orchestra and Christoph von Dohnányi presented the composer at his most heroic. One of their first recordings together, 17 years previously, had been of the ‘Eroica’ Symphony for Telarc; then in 1990 Decca recorded the Grosse Fuge with them, in an interpretation which they would hone over decades, in many performances at home and abroad.
