Crawford: Andante for Strings | Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 | Brahms: Symphony No. 2

The Brahms cycle given by the Cleveland Orchestra and Christoph von Dohnányi continued with the Second Symphony, outwardly his sunniest but not without what the composer called ‘sour cherries’. It was complemented by the ambivalence of Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto, in which the brief slow movement stages a dramatic confrontation between soloist and orchestra, and prefaced by the brief and powerfully astringent Andante for string orchestra by Ruth Crawford Seeger.
