- Programme:
- Wagner: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
After the success of Der fliegende Holländer in December 1957, Christoph von Dohnányi turned to the not inconsiderable task of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg for his second Wagner production as General Music Director of the Lübeck Opera. Hans Zimmermann’s staging reflected the composer’s original inspiration in the mise-en-scène of 16th-century Nuremberg, and Dohnányi ‘imposed his authority on the score from first bar to last’ according to one review; particular praise was reserved for the fresh, bell-like timbres of Edith Vogt-Thieke as Eva.
