In the first half of this NDR Sinfonieorchester concert, Christoph von Dohnányi conducted two tone-poems by Richard Strauss. Don Juan (1888) and Till Eulenspiegel (1895) are often paired on record; less so in concert, not least because each is so demanding of the orchestra. Both works portray fearless characters who flagrantly defy the authority and morals of their times, with an undoubted autobiographical subtext.
