- Lutoslawski: Musique funèbre | Bartók: Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta | Beethoven: Symphony No. 7
Composed in 1958, the Funeral Music of Witold Lutoslawski pays homage to the memory of Bartok not only in its title but its structure, which resembles the slow fugue that opens the Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. Both pieces reach their climax at the golden-section point, roughly five-eights of the way through. The Funeral Music is also one of the first pieces in which Lutoslawski deployed a version of 12-tone composition which he would make his own during the next three decades.
