In their first concerts together since touring Europe throughout February, the Cleveland Orchestra and Christoph von Dohnányi were joined by two fine American singers for the first local performance of the often ironic settings made by Mahler from Clemens Brentano’s artful compilation of folk tales and poetry, Des Knaben Wunderhorn; a premiere all the more surprising given George Szell’s special association with these songs, though his famous EMI recording was made with the London Symphony Orchestra. A fortnight later in Carnegie Hall, the New York Times reported that ‘Miss Quivar’s luminous tone and the orchestra’s breathtaking command of soft sonorities in ‘Urlicht’ added up to an enrapturing moment that swept aside previous quibbles.’
