A distant descendant of Felix Mendelssohn, Robert-Alexander Bohnke (1927-2005) had studied with pupils of Schnabel, Busoni and Rachmaninov, but by the time of this appearance with the Tonkünstler Orchestra his teaching commitments as professor of piano at the Freiburger Musikhochschule were restricting his activities as a performer, and he left few recordings, though among them is a set of chromatically turn-of-the-century miniatures by his father, Emil Bohnke, in performances notable for their understated charm and supple legato.
