For the first of his two subscription programmes given with the Wiener Philharmoniker in the autumn of 1981, Christoph von Dohnányi conducted Liszt with the pianist Alexander Jenner; they had collaborated in Mozart and Beethoven with the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Vienna some years earlier. The two concertos have always been the most frequently played of Liszt’s works for piano and orchestra, but this programme offered his glissando-studded fantasia on the Dies Iraeplainchant, Totentanz.
