Berliner Philharmoniker, Philharmonie, September 16, 1972

Soloists: Zöller, Karlheinz (flute), Koch, Lothar (oboe), Leister, Karl (clarinet)
Programme:
Ligeti: Lontano | Ligeti: Concerto for flute, oboe and orchestra | Blacher: Clarinet Concerto | Blacher: Variations for orchestra on theme by Paganini

Perhaps the most lasting of the three works given their world or German premieres at this 1972 Berliner Festwochen concert is György Ligeti’s Lontano, now a classic of slowly shifting texture music. The Concerto for flute and oboe is now less often heard, but no less hushed and haunting. The two works by Boris Blacher are more extrovert, ending with what used to be a pop-contemporary classic, the Paganini Variations.
