In the spring of 2014, Yefim Bronfman and Christoph von Dohnányi presented a three-concert cycle of Beethoven, working through the five piano concertos and three of the four attempts he made at writing an overture fit for the scale of his only opera. On the cycle’s first programme, the first two concertos were paired with Leonore No.3 which, as Beethoven came to recognise, so successfully condenses the drama of Fidelio as to render it a self-contained work, forerunner of the symphonic poem popularised by Liszt.
