Christoph von Dohnányi has always been an insightful if selective conductor of Sibelius, passing over the tone-poems to focus on a couple of the symphonies and the Violin Concerto which was initially deemed unplayable by its dedicatee. He last conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the concerto just seven months earlier; in this Tanglewood Festival concert, the soloist was Gil Shaham.
