In his second appearance at the 2004 Tanglewood Festival, Christoph von Dohnányi conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra in a pairing of mentor and mature pupil: it was Robert Schumann who first drew the world’s attention to Brahms’s gifts, and Brahms never forgot Schumann’s enthusiasm and kindness, visiting him at the asylum in Endenich where he was confined for his miserable last years after another episode of the mental illness which he had lived through while composing the Second Symphony.
