Cleveland Orchestra, Performance Hall, May 22, 2001
- Programme:
- Bartók: Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta | Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4
A concert of taut drama in the Bass Performance Hall, Fort Worth, opened the Cleveland Orchestra’s brief tour to Texas at the end of their 2000-1 season with Christoph von Dohnányi. Their Decca recording of Bartok’s Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta had already received critical praise in Gramophone for its ‘notably intense’ opening slow fugue and ‘supple and thoughtfully articulated’ finale. Though unrecorded, Tchaikovsky’s last three symphonies tended to bring the best out of this partnership, especially the Fate-driven Fourth.
