Cleveland Orchestra, Kyoto Concert Hall, May 19, 1998
- Programme:
- Bartók: Divertimento | Mozart: Symphony No. 40 | Dvořák: Symphony No. 9
For the second concert of their Far-Eastern tour, the Cleveland Orchestra and Christoph von Dohnányi flew 500km north-east to Kyoto, where they played in another new hall, also opened in 1995 and built as part of the commemorations to mark the 1200th anniversary of the city’s foundation as the ancient capital of Heiankyo. The exterior of bridges and gardens may pay homage to that heritage, but the hall’s shoe-box interior is dominated by a Klais-built concert organ in the archetypal European style.
