Webern Symphonie Orchester, Musikverein, April 20, 2018

Programme:
Ives: The Unanswered Question | Brahms: Symphony No. 2 | Schumann: Symphony No. 4

With this pairing of German Romantic symphonies, Schumann’s Fourth and Brahms’s Second, Christoph von Dohnányi returns to Vienna: not to lead one of the city’s distinguished professional orchestras, but working with the young musicians of the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst, whose main ensemble is known as the Webern Symphonie Orchester. In fact the orchestra can call upon a distinguished history of just over two centuries, having been founded in 1817 as a conservatoire under the auspices of the same Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde that established the Wiener Philharmoniker. After a concert in January with the Berlin Staatskapelle, this occasion marks a second debut appearance in 2018 for the 88-year-old Dohnányi.
