Philharmonisches Orchester der Hansestadt Lubeck, Stadthalle, January 20, 1958

Soloists: Schmidt, Rosl (piano)
Programme:
Handel: Concerto Grosso No. 11 | Pfitzner: Drei Palestrina-Vorspiele | Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 2

In the early years of his career, Christoph von Dohnányi conducted Baroque music at a time when it had not become largely the preserve of musicians with a specialist training in its theory and practice. Symphony orchestras would commonly address themselves to works such as the work by Handel known at the time simply as Concerto Grosso No.11. This A major concerto is among the latest and most elaborate of his Opus 6 set, and survived in regular performance during the Romantic era when most of Handel’s output otherwise sank into obscurity.
