Wagner: Tannhäuser

Wagner’s sixth completed opera, Tannhäuser, became a regular undertaking for Christoph von Dohnányi during the 1960s, including productions in Cassel and Munich: this new staging by Reinhold Schubert was his first attempt at the score, during his last season as General Music Director of the Lübeck Opera. The title role was sung by Karl Liebl, a regular presence in houses across Germany and the US during the 1960s, whose career is largely unrepresented on record. Perhaps his most famous appearance was as Tristan at the Metropolitan Opera – or rather, as the Tristan of Act 2. Ramon Vinay sang Act 1 and Albert da Costa Act 3, when each tenor announced he was too ill to sing the complete part but Rudolf Bing persuaded them to take on a third of this most exigent of heroic roles.
